Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition

The Private Cloud for Data Centers

Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition (Eucalyptus EE) enables customers to implement private cloud computing using Eucalyptus, the most popular open source private cloud software, with purpose-built solutions that extend its functionality. Eucalyptus EE contains the open source core platform and a suite of products that allow Enterprises and Service Providers to implement the most portable, scalable and high performing private cloud solution available today.

Eucalyptus EE is also API compatible with Amazon Web Services™, which enables our customers to implement a true hybrid cloud computing environment that includes private and public clouds to meet IT service demand. For information on the products available within Eucalyptus EE please review the tabs below.

Built on Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition is built on Eucalyptus -- an open source software infrastructure for implementing a private cloud computing using an organization’s own information technology (IT) infrastructure, without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration. Eucalyptus turns data center resources such as machines, networks, and storage systems into a cloud that is controlled and customized by local IT. Eucalyptus is the only cloud architecture to support the same application programming interfaces (APIs) as public clouds, and today Eucalyptus is fully compatible with the Amazon Web Services™ cloud infrastructure.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Leverages many virtualization technologies to provide a private cloud within your data center
  • Includes an image converter that helps users develop VMware-enabled Eucalyptus applications that are compatible with Amazon EC2
  • Advanced storage integration (iSCSI, SAN, NAS) enables you to easily connect and manage your existing storage systems from within the Eucalyptus cloud
  • Manage your data replication locations and even the degree of replication from an easy-to-use management console (no single point of failure for both data and services)

Top Benefits

  • Run your Amazon Machine Image (AMI) instances on your VMware-based hypervisors on your private cloud
  • Seamlessly manage environments with multiple hypervisors (Xen, KVM,vSphere, ESX™ and ESXi™) under one management console
  • Test, develop, and deploy on your private Eucalyptus EE cloud and smoothly transition to a public cloud or vice-versa, without any modifications
  • Quickly and easily build hybrid clouds with your existing environment and other public clouds
  • Leverage the vibrant ecosystem built around AWS -- RightScale™, CohesiveFT™, Zmanda™ and rPath™ are just a few of the partners that deliver solutions for Amazon AWS that in-turn work seamlessly with Eucalyptus

Turn your VMware environment into a private cloud

The Eucalyptus EE VMware Broker enables you to run vSphere™, ESX™ and ESXi™ virtualization technologies in your Amazon-compatible Eucalyptus cloud. With the VMware Broker solution, customers are able to homogenize the multiple hypervisor technologies that may exist within their IT infrastructure. Now data centers are able to run Xen, KVM, vSphere, ESX™ and ESXi™ hypervisors within the same Eucalyptus cloud that transforms your underlying virtualized environments into an a private cloud with a one-stop management console.

The VMware Broker also includes an image converter that helps users develop VMware-enabled Eucalyptus applications that are compatible with Amazon EC2. With Amazon Web Services interface compatibility, you and your software can now interact with your private Eucalyptus EE cloud in exactly the same way as you would with an Amazon EC2 public cloud.

The SAN Adapter for Eucalyptus EE provides functionality to connect a Eucalyptus cloud directly to a high-performance Storage Area Network (SAN). This solution provides another cloud storage option beyond the loopback file system that is used in the open source version. The SAN Adaptor gives your cloud greater IO performance for both the Storage Controller block volumes and Walrus put/get storage operations. Incorporating the SAN Adapter increases IO performance across your entire cloud and allows for much larger-scale clouds.

Key Features and Functionality

  • Provides an iSCSI direct data connection from your Eucalyptus cloud compute nodes to your SAN or JBOD infrastructure
  • Allows Eucalyptus to directly manage Storage Controller block volumes on your SAN
  • Interacts directly with your SAN environment via Walrus bucket-based storage operations

Top Benefits

  • Increases overall cloud IO performance
  • Improves image launch and provision times
  • Increases block storage volume and snapshot performance
  • Scales your cloud to larger groups of users

How it Works

The SAN Adapter is implemented as a direct iSCSI connection that allows Eucalyptus-managed virtual machine instances to connect to your SAN or JBOD infrastructure. The SAN Adapter communicates over the SAN control channel, setting up direct data connections to the node controllers via the SAN data channel.
